News: Xbox modding trial officially begins
Should be interesting.
Yes, he used a pirated game to test his hack. But that doesn't mean he was hacking it solely to play said games. He was using his hacked one for pirated games. Sure, pretty straightforward logic there. BUT, doing it for other people....not so striaght-forward. Many people just want it modded to play homebrew and indie games. Not pirated ones. If you don't specifically ask him to do it so they can play pirate games...then there's no case there. And even if you did ask him that specifically, does that fact that what he's doing CAN be used only for homebrew, etc. mean that he's guilty? I guess I don't know.

Op-Ed: Free app, device could be ideal for small business
This is really cool.
Even if it's not necessarily unique.
The idea is this: you sign up for an account. The company, Square, sends you a FREE device capable of reading credit cards. Then, you can use the device and your iPhone to accept credit card transactions. Pretty nifty. Square takes 2.75 percent of the transaction plus 15 cents. Not too shabby, especially considering that using the credit card's vendors typically charge even a little more than that. The only catch is that there is a limit - $100 per day and $700 per week.
I hoping this works really well (and forces credit card companies to find a new way to make money).

Woman makes mistake entering info into TurboTax. IRS finds out. IRS penalizes woman. Seems straight forward.
The error was not the fault of the software. If you make your own mistake filling it out on paper, you are penalized. Same when you enter it electronically the same way.
TurboTax's guarantee about audits is THEIR promise to you. There MAY be a claim for the woman for TurboTax to pay for (a portion of?) the fines/penalties the woman now owes. That's their advertised guarantee. It does not shield the woman from the penatlies, just that she may have a claim for reimbursement from Intuit, makers of TurboTax.

Found a hilarious comment though: 'This is maybe third or fourth grade level math here people, and it's kinda sad that there is even any confusion about it. .66 is not 2/3, it's a little less than 2/3 and it does not count if the law says 2/3. News: Google may open source VP8 (high-quality video) codec
Very very good for everyone. The main obstacle between dumping flash (with all it's problems and downloads and updating) and moving to HTML5 is getting everyone to agree on a good codec. Some like the high quality of H.264, but it's proprietary. Mozilla likes Ogg Theora because it's open source, but not too good of quality. Just making it unpaid doesn't mean you get free labor. Interesting given the rise of unpaid internships in the downturn. Isn't having interns do the work cheaper than having an employee do it anyway? Really? Wow...just wow. Because it was set on 'stun' and not 'dart' mode, it's not excessive force, according to the court. Is there no consideration about the NUMBER of times she was tasered? No? WTF? So as long as it's only on a low pain setting, I can taser someone as much as I want? Something's not right in that logic.
News: New RFID tag could be end of bar codes
At 3 cents per tag, this is getting to a place that is cost-possible for manufacturers.
I remember a commercial a few years back. A guy in a trenchcoat, trying hard to look suspicious, is walking around a grocery store. He keeps picking up items and 'hiding' them in his trenchcoat, all the while being followed by a stern looking security gaurd. After getting a punch of items, he walks through some blue-looking force field. The security gaurd stops hip.....to give him the receipt he forgot.
The blue field was a scan of some kind. It picked out the items in his pockets and charged, presumably, an account on file. Pretty cool that this is close to being reality.
My problem is this: What happens if I bring an item I have already purchased INTO the store, and then walk back out? Am I charged again? How will the system be able to differentiate items already purchased from those buying this time through? This is mostly for clothing stores (at least, in my head), but what is the answer here?

Op-Ed; Use Ubuntu Live CD for online banking safety
Basically, using your PC for online is dumb. It's got so much malware and security breaches that you should never log in on it. How to fix this?
Use a Linux (in this case, Ubuntu) Live CD. A Live CD is basically an operating system running off of a CD. Just slip it in and it will run. Then, any malware on your system can't touch it. You can even get a Live CD which, on startup, will load Firefox and your banks website. So just put the CD in and it will bring you to the log-on for your bank. Pretty nifty.

News: Tool maker loses suit for NOT using patented technology
Man uses saw. Man cuts self with saw. Man sues saw company for not including safety feature that is patented by third-party. Man wins lawsuit?
It's that last bit that gets me. So a company is required to include safety features? Even if they might not work? Even if they will be cost-debilitating? Isn't that the whole point of the free market, to allow companies to decide for themselves whether the inclusion of this feature will make it more or less competitive in the market? And where does this jury get off by allowing a specific patent holder the control over which saws are able to be sold (by deciding whether or not to license the patents to each individual company or not)?

SCOGA: State can place non-sex offenders on sex offender registry
Georgia. Georgia. Georgia.
You were doing so well...
The Supreme Court of Georgia has ruled that the state may require placement of even non-sex offenders on the sex offender registry. This would require them to get permission to travel across state lines, are banned from social networking, can have their photos posted online, and, obviously, has HUGE stigma for being labelled a sexual deviant.
Jake Rainer was charged with false imprisonment when he was 18 for briefly detaining a 17-year-old girl during a soured drug deal. By a federal law, the state are required to have statutes requiring sex-offender registration for those convicted of kidnapping or falsely imprisoning minors. The court ruled that the plain meaning of 'sex offender' is overridden by the state's law.
At least there were some dissenting opinions. Two wrote that because registration places limits on where the offenders may live, work and congregate, it 'is not a requirement that should not be imposed cavalierly.'
Rainer is waiting to see if Georgia changes its law before going to the U.S. Supreme Court. Here's hoping Georgia wises up before it needs to get to that level.
Not holding my breath, Georgia.

Except that this is about the Dutch, it would seem surprising.
News: Mississippi school cancels prom when lesbians ask to attend
She asks for her and her girlfriend to be able to attend, and that she be allowed to wear a tuxedo. So the school cancels the prom.
Understanding that they can't just prohibit her and her girlfriend to attend because it would be discrimination...they school opts to cancel the entire prom rather than allow them to go. Wow....just wow.
Keep in mind, now, that while a girl kissing another girl is enough to get the entire event cancelled....straight girls can go wearing little more than strippers (mid-act!) and still attend...and grind on the dance floor...and so forth. Really....really? What the hell is the world coming to? She just wants to go to her prom and is willing to wear MORE clothes....come on now, Mississippi. News: Comcast 'Unlimited usage' really means '250GB per month'
Misleading much? Illegal much? I should say so.
No person of any kind, reasonable or no, can argue that saying that you cannot go over 250GB per month is something other than a limit. And a preset limit at that.
Oh, and the argument of 'access' over 'usage' that the simpleton customer service rep spoke of? Access entails usage when it comes to the Internet. One cannot access any materials via the Internet without transfer of data. That is what the Internet is, merely transmission of data. Access entails the transmission of such data, otherwise, one has no access. So, go ahead. Play that card and see how far you go.
Why are deceptive practices such as these the norm when it comes to technical services? I realize that most people don't understand the difference or how the Internet truly works. And, to be honest, it's OK if they want to pray on those ignorant to the reality of it. But, when someone who knows what they are talking about questions the practice, they really need to fold like a house of cards. Just pack up and stop it. Trying to justify your BS policy to someone who knows your full of crap, just makes you look likes idiots.
If you want to ride the wave of technology to capitalistic success, you can't alienate the ones who will build your next technological advantage. Let me put it another way...
Piss of the geeks, and they'll work with your enemy to destroy you.

News: The Lancet retracts vaccine-autism links study
The Lancet is a major British medical journal. In 1998, they printed a study linking the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine to autism and bowel disease. Since then, 10 of the 13 co-authors have renounced the study.
The original author, Brit surgeon and medical researcher Andrew Wakefield now faces being stripped of his license. But, nonetheless, the study has spawned a stupidly large debate over whether or not giving your child vaccination can cause autism.
Couple of things here:
First, any study that links a syrum to both autism and BOWEL disease, two seemingly distinct issues that probably shouldn't be together in the same relation, probably isn't the most reliable thing in the world. Big surprise it was scrutinized.
Second, good for The Lancet. Shame on shoddy science.
And, yes. Anything who decided not to immunize their kids: you're a simpleton. Immunize your damn kids.

SCOTUS: Eases restrictions on campaign spending for corporations
We should be STRENGTHENING these limits, not easing them!
Corporations should not be given the power to use profits to influence politics. Individuals, fine...money is speech. Not sure I agree, but fine. But corporations?
Corporations are treated as people, though they shouldn't be. A business makes money from people buy selling products and services these people want. But buying these things is NOT a representation that they also support the businesses political leaning/ambitions. The business should not be treated as a person in this case and there should be NO political contributions from it.
The owner and shareholders of said business should be able to spend their own money freely and openly for whatever political campaign they choose.
Or at least they should be able to for the purposes of this argument.
