News: Google may open source VP8 (high-quality video) codec

Very very good for everyone. The main obstacle between dumping flash (with all it's problems and downloads and updating) and moving to HTML5 is getting everyone to agree on a good codec. Some like the high quality of H.264, but it's proprietary. Mozilla likes Ogg Theora because it's open source, but not too good of quality. Google bought the VP8 codec...open sourcing it will be the best of both...if only Microsoft's IE and Apple's Safari jump on board....which is a pretty big if.
