News: Smartphone use as car keys by 2015

Barf. Do not want. Steal my phone means you can steal my car (because I can't call to cancel/block anything...because you stole my phone).

News: 1st non-Google company gets autonomous drivers license

I like it. This company is the company that sells tech to ALL of the car companies. If they can get this down, we might start seeing automatic driving in low-speed (a.k.a. rush hour) settings. So, if you are stuck in traffic, just turn on the auto-pilot (won't change lanes, won't hit car in front of your, will keep up) and you can read or something. When traffic picks back up, take back over and drive.

Wait wait wait. This was...real?!? Holy $#!7, Batman! That is truly awesome. I still want to know how going from 0-125m.p.h. in an instant doesn't snap your neck. Flex in the wire? Stretching of the harness? I wish I had more time to investigate.

So...cool. Machine learning, to save us money. And, it looks awesome and spacey....

Op-Ed: Stop wearing bike helmets, society is healthier

Interesting. 'Falls' where a helmet would prevent injury are 'rare.' And, the stigma with not wearing one prevents many from biking at all, leading to higher rates of obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

Interesting take.

SCOTUS: unwilling DUI suspect/blood test/warrant need case taken

Damn short titles.

The court decided to hear a case on whether or not a warrant is needed to perform a blood test on an unwilling DUI suspect. FTA (buried at the bottom) - 'The court also: Agreed to decide when law enforcement officers must get a warrant before ordering a blood test on an unwilling drunken-driving suspect. The Missouri Supreme Court said police need a warrant to take a suspect's blood except in special circumstances when a delay could threaten a life or destroy potential evidence. Other courts have ruled that dissipation of alcohol in the blood is reason enough for police to call for a blood test without first getting a warrant.'

I'm confused. Why do you care? Are you really saying that his liking an out of state school (or maybe, god forbid, their sports team?) should prevent him from his education? Go ahead, Oklahoma. Take back the I'm-the-dumbest-state title from Texas.

Report: Texas GOP opposes teaching critical thinking skills

Seriously? What the hell, Texas? You're already widely mocked as the one of the dumbest states in the union. You want to make that worse?

Worse still, reports come out nearly every week stating that employers are desperate for workers with critical thinking skills. So, in a state where a disproportionate amount of your students will finish the education with a high school diploma (or less), you want to make them LESS able to find a job?

News: Germany's Left party calls for 40K per month salary cap

Not entirely unlike my own tax plan. 40K per month is 480K per year. Half a million per year. I think my cap would be a little higher, but this is America. 85K per month is million per year. Might be more palatable (yes...I realize that this is an idealist view and will NEVER occur in the free market society that is America. I'm cool with that. I just like the intellectual exercise.)

Op-Ed: Why you should never, ever use two spaces after a period

I post this because....I use two spaces. All the time. I was one who ALWAYS said you have to use two. I'm doing it as I write this, mostly out of habit. There. Better? Feels unnatural. *SIGH* That's better, but I'll work on it.

Sports: MLB expands playoffs to 10 by adding two more wildcards

Awesome! Now the AL East can get THREE teams in the playoffs instead of just two :-)

In 8 of the last 10 years, the wild card team has been from the AL East. The Yankees, Boston and Tampa Bay have held two of the playoffs spots 18 times in the last ten years. Having a second wild card team would have meant 4 more AL East teams, 2 more AL Central teams, and 3 more AL West teams, with one more going to a playoff game between the AL Central and the AL West. In NONE of those instances would the 2nd Wild Card team been the Twins or the Blue Jays. But it MIGHT be sometime...

Also, out of the last ten years, if there was a 2nd Wild Card team, only three times would both wild card teams come from the same division. 2011 and 2011 would see two AL East wild card teams, and 2006 would have seen two AL Central wild cards. Interesting stuff. Clearly more beneficial for the AL East. Which is good news for the Blue Jays....if they can ever beat the Yankees, Red Sox, AND Tampa Bay in the same season...not an easy feat.

Film: 'Heart Stop Beating'-story of replacing a heart with a pump

This is SO cool!

They take out the heart and install two turbines which continuously move the blood through the body. The pulse itself is not necessary for human life. It is merely the byproduct of the heart's pumping actions. The goal is the movement of blood through the body to deliver oxygen gained from passing through the lungs. Why not have this do it?

How reliable is the hardware used? How is it powered? These are my questions. If the hardware is more reliable than the muscle and the power is renewable beyond...say 120 years...sign me the hell up.

Op-Ed: Teen bullying documentary R rated, can't be seen by teens

One of the dumbest things I've heard of in a while. It features REAL teens, speaking in their own language about what ACTUALLY happens to teens. But teens can't see the movie? I realize they can see the movie with an adult...but this is exactly what teens SHOULD be able to see without their parents letting them in. This is about their real lives. How can it be unfit for teens to see?

I understand fictional movies having ratings based on content. But this is a documentary about TEEN bullying. It should be able to be seen by teens without restriction.

9USCCA: CA voter law to collect DNA from felony arrestees OK

I really can't believe it.

Awful: New Ulm, MN elementray students playing 'rape tag'

Yeah. Like freeze tag. But instead of tagging, or crawling under them to un-freeze your teammates....you hump them. Yeah. What the hell.... From what you read, the teachers and administrators have done a good job dealing with it. Some parents are 'upset about having to deal with such an issue at their young age.' And the teachers are happy about having to try and explain why they can't play the game? You're the parents! You get to deal with it. Welcome to being a real parent. It's not the teacher's tried to have this happen so you'd have to deal with it. Blame that on letting your kids watch crappy TV....I'm just assuming, of course.

9USCCA: Gay marriage ban unconstitutional

News: Rep. Fleming (R-LA) believes Onion's 'Abortionplex' story

I love it.

Don't get me wrong, I have fallen for a headline. But then, I click to confirm and SEE that it's the Onion. And laugh.

I do not then try to fool anyone else into believing it...like this Representative will probably try to pass it off as. He's an idiot. He thought it was real AFTER reading the whole article.

Impeach or elect someone else. Seriously...

Update: Woman ordered to decrypt laptop may have forgot password?

Never thought of this. Woman is ordered to decrypt laptop (a process I'm not sure if I agree or disagree with yet), has supposedly forgotten the password? Can you really hold her in contempt? You have no way to determine if she has or has not forgotten the password.

I realize that this will be a judgement call by the judge (and in latter case, possibly by a jury) to determine if she is telling the truth about forgetting. But, if it is reasonable possible to forget, can you really leave that up to a judge? To indefinitely hold a person in contempt for something that can be reasonably expected to not be their fault? Interesting...
