News: Sesame Street goes beyond counting, to math and science

Neato!

Op-Ed: Euthanasia Roller Coaster

Lithuania designer developed the Euthanasia Coaster, in part, under his PhD work.

Two minute, 1600 foot climb allows the rider to reflect, and, maybe more importanlty, really decide. At the top is the go-no-go button. Press the 'FALL' button, and it's all but over. Then 1600 foot drop followed by successively smaller, and, therefore, increasingly G-force imparting loops. If you remain conscious, the loops will impart 'disorientation, anxiety, confusion, and, most importantly, euphoria -- is crowned with GLOC (G-force induced Loss Of Consciousness), during which the body is completely limp and vivid bizarre dreams occur such as being in a maze and unable to get out, or floating in a white space, not knowing who you are, why you are here, etc.'

Interesting stuff. It's just a theoretical model (at 1:1600 scale), but it's interesting food for thought. I guess I'm not in that position, but I can't imagine hitting the FALL button...or at least not regreting it after the fall starts.

Update: Violent game decision experts experience varies widely

In the SCOTUS decision, the justices referenced that the studies regarding the youth link between violent video games and violence were not conclusive. But looking at the experts' experience, maybe it should have been more conclusive than they thought.

And yes, I hate saying this.

Those experts on the side of the fact that there IS a link between video game violence and real world violence in young kids had MUCH better research cred than those debunking the link.

Cool: Transparent VW factory in Dresden

SO COOL! Totally transparent and technological process. I really like the inductive floors for power. So sweet. Can we go?

News: IBM's Watson ties human Jeopardy champs on day 1

Very very cool. And a good article to boot. I like the intro Trebek does for the computer system and explaining how it's not just the monitor that people see in the video, but a big ass system with the monitor just the interface. So cool.

Interesting how this will change with Verizon's iPhone.

News: TSA considering three screening classes

Interesting idea. Just worry about how well the background checks will work. The second a 'trusted' traveler makes trouble, it'll be toast. But hopefully the background checks are worthwhile and get it done.

And how to distinguish regular from risky?

Op-Ed: More than just I think 'Super 8' looks like 'E.T. 2'

News: Aguilera repeats line of national anthem at Super Bowl XLV

I could have sworn she messed something up. But then again, I wasn't sure enough myself to point it out at the time. Guess you can't blame her too much, what with millions of people watching and all.

News: UK High Court bans low IQ man from having sex

...that's some ballsy court

Decision based on the fact that he is too mentally challenged to consent to sex. Surprisingly solid reasoning. Not sure I'm OK with the ruling, but solid reasoning none the less.

Op-Ed: Why do we sleep?

Answer: Nobody knows. I hate articles that do this.

Funny: 'Backwash' online web series featuring Joshua Malina

Stupid funny stuff. Some slapstick. Pretty decent. I laughed.

I enjoy Joshua Malina. SportsNight, West Wing, and a recent string of pretty funny TV spots. Worth a watch.

Study: Teen girls who play video games with father happier

Adolescent girls who play age-appropriate video games with their fathers are happier, healthier and have better family connections than those who don't. Games that were positively correlated with happier girls included Mario Kart, Wii Sports and Guitar Hero.

News: New TSA body scanner software more modest

Uses more of a generic chalk outline, with squares over anomolies. As opposed to actual nude images. I am much more happy with this, but still worried that the original images are still available, both locally and to be taken off the machine.

Study: U.S. students need more paths to success - Harvard

They suggest following the European model of having multiple 'paths' for a more focused occupational education.

News: AZ bill requiring Presidential candidates prove birth in US

Another in the 'Yep....Arizone finally done lost its mind' column. If he WEREN'T really born in Hawai'i, don't you think someone would have shouted it from the rooftops? Instead of just mumbling to themselves, kind of crazy-like.

News: Burger King announces first Jucy-Lucy ripoff stuffed burger

It's got small bits of cheese in the patty. Not TRULY stuffed like one would think. No full inside of cheese, just bits here and there. We'll see how that does.

News: Twitter challenges gag order on behalf of users!

We should all be so lucky.

Twitter feels that users should be informed of any legal request made of the company. So, instead of just handing over the information requested (like many companies this year), Twitter got it's spine up and ready and challenged the gag order attached. That way, it could notify the users about which the information was requested so that they (the users) could effectively challenge the request in court. I really like this. And to see it in a company restores at least some faith in freedom and justice in the U.S.

News: Feds arrest 2 for exploiting video poker glitch, winning

Not sure where I stand on this

I guess I don't know the exact definition of computer fraud, so he might be hosed. But on the other hand, if you put out a program that sucks (and, in fact, use it's failures as a shield against paying up), then you can't say that it's WRONG that he found a bug in your software and used it.

Blame and sue the companies who made it, fine. But you put it out there for use.
