Op-Ed: Euthanasia Roller Coaster
Lithuania designer developed the Euthanasia Coaster, in part, under his PhD work.
Two minute, 1600 foot climb allows the rider to reflect, and, maybe more importanlty, really decide. At the top is the go-no-go button. Press the 'FALL' button, and it's all but over. Then 1600 foot drop followed by successively smaller, and, therefore, increasingly G-force imparting loops. If you remain conscious, the loops will impart 'disorientation, anxiety, confusion, and, most importantly, euphoria -- is crowned with GLOC (G-force induced Loss Of Consciousness), during which the body is completely limp and vivid bizarre dreams occur such as being in a maze and unable to get out, or floating in a white space, not knowing who you are, why you are here, etc.'
Interesting stuff. It's just a theoretical model (at 1:1600 scale), but it's interesting food for thought. I guess I'm not in that position, but I can't imagine hitting the FALL button...or at least not regreting it after the fall starts.

Update: Violent game decision experts experience varies widely
In the SCOTUS decision, the justices referenced that the studies regarding the youth link between violent video games and violence were not conclusive. But looking at the experts' experience, maybe it should have been more conclusive than they thought.
And yes, I hate saying this.
Those experts on the side of the fact that there IS a link between video game violence and real world violence in young kids had MUCH better research cred than those debunking the link.

From the article - "one percent wealthiest Americans hold nearly 50 percent of the country's wealth, while the richest 20 percent hold 84 percent of the wealth. But in their study, the authors found Americans generally underestimate the income disparity. When asked to estimate, respondents on average estimated that the top 20 percent have 59 percent of the wealth (as opposed to the real number, 84 percent). And when asked to choose how much the top 20 percent should have, on average respondents said 32 percent -- a number similar to the wealth distribution seen in Sweden."

Rumor: US Gov't considering personal 'miles travelled' tax
Would install electronic devices in everybody's car and tax you based on the number of miles you drive. Good for the environment, bad for the pocketbook? Would miles driven to work be exempt? How is THAT figured? If not, you're going to tax me on making the money and on the miles I had to drive to get that money? WTF?

News: ICANN approves .xxx domain name for pornographic sites
Wow. I wonder how long Congress will allow that...not that they have the ability to do anything about it....sorta.
Parents...just block the '.xxx' domain on your computers and your children will be (generally) safe from pornography.
Until I start my pornproxy.com address anyway...

Drove right by it. Flames 100 feet in the air. Across a parking lot and 10 lanes of 35W, it was hot on my face...in my car with the window closed. Pretty crazy. Probably less than 20 blocks from our house.

Op-Ed: Female take on feminine relationship hypocrisy
That is...they want to be equal, but still want you to hold the door, pay for the meals, and all the other gentlemenly stuff. In a world where women are our equals (or superiors) in school and work (women in some large cities now make MORE than their male counterparts), they still expect to be the one treated. Now this isn't true of most women, but still a very large number. The female author writes that men are disappointed to find out that the modern women they were chasing because they were supposed to want the same things (financial independence, career success, fit bodies, and sex) turn out to be "entitled, dishonest, self-involved, slutty, manipulative, shallow, controllingand did I mention gold-digging?"
Very interesting read.

Interesting idea. Just worry about how well the background checks will work. The second a 'trusted' traveler makes trouble, it'll be toast. But hopefully the background checks are worthwhile and get it done.

News: Twitter challenges gag order on behalf of users!
We should all be so lucky.
Twitter feels that users should be informed of any legal request made of the company. So, instead of just handing over the information requested (like many companies this year), Twitter got it's spine up and ready and challenged the gag order attached. That way, it could notify the users about which the information was requested so that they (the users) could effectively challenge the request in court. I really like this. And to see it in a company restores at least some faith in freedom and justice in the U.S.

Not sure where I stand on this
I guess I don't know the exact definition of computer fraud, so he might be hosed. But on the other hand, if you put out a program that sucks (and, in fact, use it's failures as a shield against paying up), then you can't say that it's WRONG that he found a bug in your software and used it.
Blame and sue the companies who made it, fine. But you put it out there for use.
